GBES Weekly Family Forecast (May 9-13)

Good Afternoon Families,

We hope all the important people in our students’ lives have a very special Mother’s Day!  We are excited for our field trip to watch “The Lion King” at Prince Andrew High on Thursday. The weather looks promising for us to have a picnic lunch and a nature walk at Shubie Park following the viewing of “The Lion King.”

Subway lunch takes place tomorrow and Little Caesar’s Pizza takes place on Wednesday.

P-2 Reading Initiative

Since September, our P-2 teachers have been working hard to monitor reading levels each month and provide additional reading support to students who began the school year below expected benchmarks. In September we had 22 out of 66 students not meeting benchmarks. As of April 1st, these numbers had decreased to 15 out of 69 not meeting. We continue to strategize ways we can use instructional time to maximize supports in our school. I would like to thank Mr. Pendlebury, Ms. Oppong, Ms. Vienot, and Ms. Henderson for leading this initiative. Reading regularly or being read to at home will help to build student’s reading skills. We still have further work to do but we know we will continue to see positive results.

P-6 Field Trip to Watch “The Lion King”

Don’t forget to send in your children’s permission form for our field trip on Thursday. Ms. Betts sent out an email to our volunteers with important information about the day. We will depart George Bissett at approximately 9:25 to make our way to Prince Andrew High. After the performance, we are hoping to make our way to Shubie Park for Lunch and a “nature walk.” Make sure to pack a water, snacks, a lunch, and sunscreen for our walk. Mask must be worn at all times while on the bus and at the performance.

Grade 3 Provincial Assessments

If you have a child in grade 3 it will be important to ensure that they attend school on May 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th. Ms. Berryman has been preparing our grade 3 students with practice assessments and teaching them test taking strategies in preparation for their assessment. The results of these assessments will not be recorded on report cards, but the results will be shared with families and our grade 3 team. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and a balanced breakfast before school on these important days.
